Braces are perhaps the most tried-and-true orthodontic treatment out there, having assisted countless children with achieving straighter, healthier smiles. However, accidents happen, and it’s very possible that your child might end up breaking their braces at some point during their treatment. But the last thing either of you should do is panic; these situations can be easily resolved! That said, here are three things you should keep in mind if your child has broken their braces.

1. Get the Situation Under Control

Braces can become compromised in several ways: the wires can become loose or broken, and the brackets can also sustain damage or come off entirely. As you inspect your child’s smile, stay calm and look for any noticeable damage, and also ask them where their discomfort is. If you need to, you can give your child an over-the-counter pain reliever to combat any pain they’re feeling. Saltwater rinses and cold compresses might also help with preventing infection and providing relief. Once the situation is under control and they’re out of any immediate distress, it’ll be easier for all parties involved to address the issue.

2. Call Your Child’s Orthodontist

You should give your child’s orthodontist a call and let them know what happened. They’re the best person to address this situation, given that they put your child’s braces there in the first place! They will be able to provide you with expert advice on how to quickly handle the situation at home, or if necessary, they’ll let you know when you need to come in for assistance. If there are any broken appliances, be sure to bring them with you. Also note that you should never try to fix braces yourself with superglue, adhesives, or any other household products, as this is dangerous and these substances might be toxic and harmful.

3. Protect Your Child’s Smile Until Their Appointment

One of the most important things you can do is protect your child’s smile and braces from further harm until their appointment; you don’t want things to worsen! If there’s a broken bracket or protruding wire, you can cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent it from cutting the inside of your child’s mouth. This also means having your child avoid certain foods that might further damage their braces: hard and crunchy foods could cause problems, as can stick items like gummy candies and caramel.

Your child’s braces are an investment in their smile’s future—don’t let one small accident get in the way of their bright future!
