Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings
During a checkup, Dr. Dean will take a close look at your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, and bite to search for the early signs of potential problems. If he spots anything, he can take care of it right away before it causes any pain or lasting damage. And one of our excellent hygienists will remove all plaque and tartar from their teeth and gums, taking the time to target those hard-to-reach areas of the mouth that children often miss.
A sealant is essentially a raincoat we place over a child’s back teeth, except instead of keeping them dry, they stop cavities! A thin, clear layer of composite resin is applied to the molars (the teeth that most often develop decay), and it prevents plaque, bacteria, and food particles from accumulating on the enamel. Sealants only take a few minutes to place, the procedure is 100% painless, and they can last for several years with minimal maintenance.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver diamine fluoride is a gentle, effective way to treat areas of early decay so they don’t become a full-blown cavity. Once applied to the teeth, the silver kills all harmful oral bacteria while the fluoride strengthens the enamel. It can also serve as a fast, drill-free method of cavity treatment, which our little patients certainly appreciate!
Facial Growth & Development Evaluations
At every visit, Dr. Dean will evaluate your child’s facial growth and the alignment of their teeth and bite. Sometimes, there are small problems that if detected early, can be easily treated with an early phase of orthodontics. This will usually result in less extensive or possibly no need for orthodontic treatment in the adolescent years. This can save you money and your child from spending several teenage years in braces.
If you've got an athletic kid who can't get enough of running across the court or field, it's important to protect their teeth just like you would their head. That's where a mouthguard comes in. While you can pick up a "one size fits all" option from a sporting goods store, we strongly recommend investing in a custom-made model that comes from our pediatric dental office! These appliances fit better, are more comfortable, and offer more effective protection against impacts.
