We are proud to provide positive dental experiences every six months during children’s dental checkups and cleanings in Flower Mound, which can lead to continued oral health into adulthood.
Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
Although dental checkups and cleanings may seem routine, these appointments are essential for a healthy smile. When it comes to dental problems, the sooner they are detected and treated, the better. Over time, cavities and infections only get worse and cause more damage, but getting examined on a regular basis ensures that these issues don’t get out of hand.
In addition, a thorough dental cleaning helps to keep oral bacteria under control in your child’s mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay and infection in the future. As a result, you can have more peace of mind in between these visits that the growing smile in your home is protected!
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
A pediatric dental checkup changes as your little one grows; however, Dr. Neal will be gentle no matter what age your child is. Young patients, around one year old, are examined to make sure they are teething in a healthy way, and Dr. Neal can answer any questions you may have about their oral development and at-home care. Later on, your child will be examined for tooth decay and bite alignment, and X-rays will be added to their appointment to reveal cavities that may not be easily visible to the naked eye. If at any point we find a cavity or other issue, Dr. Neal can quickly address it.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
When your child is old enough, usually at age three or four, we will start including dental cleanings into their six-month appointments. At first, these cleanings consist of our brushing and flossing their teeth and talking to them about their at-home hygiene routine. We take this opportunity to demonstrate proper technique so that your child can learn priceless, lifelong skills. As they get older and able to sit still for longer, their cleanings in our office will involve using special instruments to remove hardened plaque, called tartar.
